Unerschütterlicher Franzose Nicolas Ivanoff, ein Franzose mit russischer und griechischer Abstammung, hat eine sprunghafte Saison 2007 hinter sich. Nach dem Wechsel von der CAP 232 auf seine neue Extra 300SR katapultierte er sich von den abgeschlagenen letzten Plätzen bis in das Mittelfeld vor. Manchmal, vor allem bei viel Wind, hatte er Probleme seine neue Maschine richtig in den Griff zu bekommen. Aber an windstillen Tagen war der Franzose ein nicht zu unterschätzender Gegner – wie er auch mit seinem Sieg im letzten Rennen in Perth unter Beweis stellte.
Ivanoff, der in Korsika als Fluglehrer tätig ist, gilt auf den wechselnden Startbahnen der Red Bull Air Race Series als der „typische“ Franzose. Er präsentiert sich stets in schicken Schals und gestyltem Outfit und wird als der am besten bekleidete Pilot im Feld gehandelt. Dank seiner Freundlichkeit, Offenheit und seines sympathischen Englisch mit französischem Akzent erfreut er sich auch im Kreise der Journalisten einer hohen Beliebtheit. “Ich hoffe, 2008 mein Punktekonto aufbessern zu können – genau so wie mein Englisch“, lacht Ivanoff, der die Saison 2005 und 2007 am siebten, 2006 am achten Gesamtrang abgeschlossen hat. “Ich möchte ein paar Rennen gewinnen, öfter am Podium stehen und am Ende unter den Top Drei mitmischen.” Seine Karriere als Aerobatic Pilot begann Ivanoff praktisch aus einem Versehen heraus. Zuvor hatte er einen Großteil seines Berufslebens als Fluglehrer verbracht. Nach sieben Jahren schloss er sich dem französischen Aerobatics Team an, das 2000 in Toulouse prompt Weltmeister wurde. Der Franzose wurde außerdem bei den nationalen Meisterschaften in Unlimited Aerobatics 2004 Zweiter. Er arbeitet aber nach wie vor als Fluglehrer, und zwar in der bekannten korsischen Flugschule „Corse Voltige“. Ivanoff ist, trotz seiner russischen und griechischen Abstammung, ein typischer Franzose. Das aufbrausende und emotionale Gemüt seiner korsischen Mitbürger fehlt ihm aber. Er gilt als sehr ruhig und bedacht, auch dann wenn die Dinge mal nicht nach Wunsch laufen. Er verleiht dem Aerobatic-Fliegen auf Grund seines eleganten Flugstils einen schon fast künstlerischen Touch, was an einem seiner starken Tage ein wahrer Genuss für das Auge sein kann. Ivanoff zählt im Teilnehmerfeld zu den aufstrebenden Rookies, die den Titelanwärtern an der Spitze das Leben immer wieder schwer machen. Nachdem er das überwältigende Gefühl eines Sieges in Perth erst einmal verinnerlicht hat, ist die Lust auf mehr natürlich groß. “Die Zuschauer beim Red Bull Air Race scheinen immer zahlreicher zu werden, auch in Fernsehen und Internet sind immer mehr Leute dabei. Der Zustrom wird auch in Frankreich immer größer, das konnte ich speziell nach meinem ersten Platz in Perth spüren“, freut sich der Franzose.

Unflappable Frenchman Nicolas Ivanoff, a Frenchman of Russian and Greek descent, had a mercurial season in 2007. He instantly shot up from the back of the pack in his CAP 232 in mid-season towards the front with his new Extra 300SR but also struggled at times to get a grip on the sensitive new plane, especially in windy conditions. But when the air was calm. Ivanoff was a force to be reckoned with – as he so convincingly demonstrated with his scintillating victory in the final race of the season in Perth. “It was a hard season for me, starting off with the slow plane and then changing to the faster plane,” Ivanoff said. “Even though I knew it would be tough at first, it was a difficult situation. The second half of the season I had the faster plane but there was a whole new set of problems to deal with. It was a faster plane but it was very hard to fly it. It was a challenge to go to each race knowing that the weather conditions would be a big factor in my result.” Ivanoff, a flight instructor in Corsica, is the quintessential Frenchman at the temporary runways set up near the Red Bull Air Race tracks around the world. Always the best-dressed pilot in the field, Ivanoff invariably shows up wearing stylish scarves and smart pilot garb. Always friendly, Ivanoff is a veritable fountain of entertaining stories to tell. With his delightfully French-accented English, straight-talking Ivanoff is a favourite for journalists at races around the world. “I’m hoping to improve my ranking in 2008 – and my English,” said Ivanoff, who finished seventh overall in 2005 and 2007, and eighth in 2006. “I’d like to win some races in 2008, to be on the podium more often and to finish the championship in the top three.”
He is an instructor at Corsica’s famous ‘Corse Voltige’ flying school. Thoroughly French despite his Russian and Greek heritage, Ivanoff is nevertheless the antithesis of a hot-blooded Corsican. Even when things aren’t going his way, Ivanoff remains calm and collected. He takes an artistic approach to flying, comparing it to “painting in the sky”, and when he’s having a good weekend, his style of flying is indeed a pleasure for the eye. Ivanoff is part of the pack of rapidly improving second-tier pilots who made life difficult for the perennial title contenders at the top and, after tasting victory in Perth, it’s clear that he wants more. “The crowds at the races seem to grow all the time and there are more and more people watching on television and the internet,” he said. “In France I could feel the change, especially after winning in Perth.” Ivanoff expects more races to be decided by fractions of a second than in 2007. “During the race, the only thing you’re thinking about now is speed because each one-hundredth of a second can turn out to be vital,” he said. “Each season the pilots are getting closer to each other. It’s incredible.”
